Tres is a home invasion thriller starring Nicolas Cage and Nicole Kidman. The story begins like many others in the genre: a seemingly wealthy family is attacked in their home by masked robbers looking for money. However, it is soon revealed that the family is bankrupt, bringing other complicated truths to light. Although somewhat tangled in its script, Joel Schumacher's direction (The Lost Boys) manages to maximize the tension of the situation, and the performances by Cage and Kidman are as good as you would expect. If you enjoy movies with intense emotions, you'll definitely enjoy this one.
Directed by her fellow Aussie, Baz Luhrmann, Moulin Rouge! is one of the definitive roles in Nicole Kidman's career, earning her an Oscar nomination for her performance. It's a frenetic love story set in late 19th-century Paris, with eclectic music and a filming style that's unmistakably 21st century.
No spoilers for those who haven't seen it, but the plot twist in The Others is one of the most characteristic of contemporary horror cinema. The unsettling atmosphere is largely sustained by Nicole Kidman’s performance as a protective mother of two photosensitive children who begin to experience strange events after new servants arrive at their home.
Given that Kidman’s career is marked by dramatic lead roles, it’s unusual –but refreshing– to see her embrace camp as a villain in a family comedy. In Paddington, she plays a taxidermist obsessed with capturing the titular bear to add him to her macabre collection.
Another unusual role in Nicole Kidman’s career came in The Northman, a Nordic revenge epic directed by Robert Eggers (The Witch). Here, she portrays the mother of the protagonist, a Viking prince whose father was murdered while he was left to die. However, the truth proves to be more complicated –and Kidman brings the necessary ambiguity to the film’s big revelation.
