Directed and written by Rawson Marshall Thurber, of films such as 'Dodgeball' and 'Skyscraper', 'Red Notice' is a typical heist story that mixes action, adventure and a bit of comedy. Starring Dwayne Johnson, Ryan Reynolds and Gal Gadot, the production tells the story of Nolan Booth (Reynolds), an art thief stealing a historic Cleopatra gold egg. However, he soon gets caught by an Interpol agent (Dwayne Johnson). All good? Of course not. Soon this agent discovers that he was ambushed - as well as the robber played by Reynolds - by a mysterious villain called Bishop. It is the beginning of a journey for the two to chase after the real eggs and show Interpol that they are not guilty of the artifacts' disappearance. There are no major changes in tone and how to drive the plot of what we are already used to in other productions of the genre, but 'Red Notice' stands out for Reynolds's sharp humor (very similar to what we see in 'Deadpool', it is worth saying) and the good presence of The Rock and Gal Gadot, who command the best action scenes of the production - besides a good final twist.
Damsel, a Netflix exclusive film, has the vibe of almost all the productions Millie Bobby Brown has ventured into after Stranger Things: uncompromising films to watch and enjoy. Here, she plays a young woman who thinks she's going to marry a perfect prince. However, the fairy tale dream is shattered when she is thrown into a hole where she discovers that she won't be a princess after all, but rather a sacrifice to appease a bloodthirsty dragon. Trying to survive long enough until someone can save her, she soon realizes that no one is coming and she'll need to save herself. It's a fun survival film, with just the right amount of fantasy, and it helps to change the eternal figure of the damsel in distress – who now doesn't need a prince by her side.
'Sweet Girl', an exclusive Netflix action movie starring Jason Momoa, comes to confirm something that has been clear for some time: the star is the ideal face for a certain type of character. Not that this is any contestation of his acting skills, but it is undeniable that he fits very well into a certain pattern, repeated in 'Aquaman', 'Game of Thrones', 'Frontier' and here. The actor is robust and serious, composing a great macho character, but also somewhat mysterious and unfriendly, the kind of intimidating guy you wouldn't dare provoke. So he is the perfect protagonist of 'Sweet Girl', a desolate father full of hatred and thirst for revenge, with a strong protective instinct and willing to do practically anything in favor of his personal perspective. Co-starring with Momoa, we still have Isabela Merced, better known for 'Dora and the Lost City'. The family chemistry between the two is very fluid and convincing, establishing a great foundation for the premise. Motivated by the loss of his wife and the protective instinct for his daughter, Momoa will spare no effort to face his enemies in a movie full of action sequences, and the right doses of suspense and drama. For those who like action movies, but suffer a bit of difficulty in suspending all disbelief, this is the right choice, balanced in the ideal measure between seriousness and violence.
'Bajocero' lost its theatrical release due to the coronavirus pandemic and Netflix took charge of distributing the production worldwide. The police thriller goes straight to the point and fulfills its promise, with unpredictable characters in a claustrophobic and impenetrable setting, important elements to hold the viewer's attention. Despite the superficial unfolding of the protagonist, the plot does not become uninteresting due to the good construction of suspense. The ending of the story is perhaps one of the great moments of the movie.
