Fernando, a journalist, and his friend César terrorist group MR8 in order to fight Brazilian dictatorial regime during the late sixties. Cesare, however, is wounded and captured during a bank hold up. Fernando then decides to kidnap the American ambassador in Brazil and ask for the release of fifteen political prisoners in exchange for his life.
"A great national film, starring Pedro Cardoso, Fernanda Torres, Cláudia Abreu, Matheus Nachtergaele, and Alan Arkin, directed by Bruno Barreto - which was an important part of the so-called "Retomada" of Brazilian cinema. Based on the homonymous book by Fernando Gabeira inspired by real facts, ‘O Que É Isso, Companheiro?’ was nominated for the Oscar for Best Foreign Film in 1998. Unfortunately, it didn't win the prize, but the recognition was worth it."
