Why watch this film?
A comic and fictional exploration of the emotional struggles of a newly-elected pope coming to with the demands of his position.
"We Have a Pope (Habemus Papam) is a fun comedy by Italian filmmaker Nanni Moretti (A Brighter Tomorrow, 2023), based on an intriguing question: what would happen if a newly elected Pope in the Conclave wasn't ready and willing to take on one of the most important roles in the kingdom of God on Earth? This is the case with Cardinal Melville (played by the legendary Michel Piccoli), who cracks under the pressure the day he is announced as the new Pope. The other cardinals agree that he should undergo psychoanalysis to perform his duties, but the rigid rules of the church clash with therapeutic practices. Moretti creates an entertaining story that shouldn't be taken too seriously, yet still reveals sharp ironies about the practices of the church."
